iMac G5 1.6 GHz - 2.0 GHzwith DDR RAM - 64 and 128-bit memory access

The iMac G5 Revision A and B machines packs a lot of power into one pizza box. They have a full G5 processor at 1.6 GHz, 1.8 GHz, or 2.0 GHz, and a stunning 17" or 20" LCD monitor. One thing it is short of compared to the PowerMac G5 machines is memory sockets - there are only two sockets. If you recall, the PowerMac G5 machines require RAM to be installed in pairs, allowing the machine to do Dual-Channel DDR access, which speeds up memory operations considerably. Because of the space limitations in the iMac G5, Apple elected to go with 2 single sockets. This means that you don't have to buy RAM two at a time, but you also give up the potential speed increase of Dual-Channel memory.

There is one speed-up available; Apple says if you install a matched pair of DDR DIMMs in the two sockets, then the memory will be accessed on a 128 bit wide path, instead of the normal 64-bit path. That's great - except they do not define what "matched pair" means. It is not sufficient to simply install two PC3200 DIMMs of the same size - the two DIMMs need to match each other at the chip level, so that the machine sees them as being identially arranged electronically.

First step: Don't order extra RAM from Apple

The easiest way to do this is to buy the iMac with the minimum RAM, as Apple's price for RAM is too high. Order one 1 Gb module from us; or if you order a pair of 1 Gb DIMMs from us, we'll guarantee they match.

But, what if you already have an iMac G5 with a single 512 Mb DIMM in it - is there a way to buy another 512 Mb DIMM with a guarantee that it will "match" the Apple-supplied 512Mb? In a word, no.

Apple does not publish the technical criteria required for the machine to match the pair of RAM for 128-bit operation, and they also do not guarantee the configuration of the 512 Mb DIMM that they supply. Because Apple buys RAM from a number of different suppliers, there is no assurance that the same specification RAM will be in two different iMacs, either. So, matching the Apple DIMM is a crapshoot whichever way you look at it.

How much difference does 128-bit access make?

Apple says it is "faster" but makes no statement about how much faster. Tests by Barefeats indicate that while memory perfomance on synthetic memory benchmarks is up to 29% faster, any performance improvement on real-world applications is within the margin of error of testing.

Do I need to match my RAM?

If you are upgrading to 2 Gb of RAM, by all means make sure you get a matched pair. The debate is at the 1 Gb level; whether to buy a pair of 512's and sell off the stock 256 Mb, or to simply add a 1 Gb DIMM for 1.25 Gb total. I lean toward the 1 Gb DIMM philosophy, simply because upgrading to 2 Gb later can be done without having to remove the two 512's.

iMac G5 "iSight" 1.9 and 2.1 GHz:
This machine has 512 Mb built-in memory and a single socket for a DDR2-533 MHz DIMM, so there is no question of matching or not. The decision is between a 1 Gb DIMM for 1.5 Gb total, and a relatively expensive 2 Gb DIMM for 2.5 Gb maximum memory. Those doing heavy Photoshop, Digital Audio and Digital Video will opt for the 2.5 Gb configuration, most others will stop at 1.5 Gb.

iMac intel CoreDuo, Mac Mini intel CoreSolo and CoreDuo, and MacBook and MacBook Pro CoreDuo
The Apple intel Core Duo and CoreSolo machines DO support true Dual-Channel RAM access, so there is a benefit to installing an equal pair of DDR2-667 SODIMMs (the iMac Intel and Mini Intel use the same laptop SODIMMs as the MacBook and MacBook Pro). The speed benefit of Dual-Channel access is most pronounced in the Mini and the MacBook, as these two machines use the main RAM for video as well (shared video RAM) so the speed of the memory impacts video performance as well as memory transfer performance. Dual Channel access by the Mac motherboard could make a speed improvement of up to 6% or 8%.

However, if the choice is between a pair of 512's for 1 Gb total, vs. a 512 + a 1 Gb for 1.5 Gb total, you will get more mileage out of the mismatched RAM for 1.5 Gb. Especially with OSX programs running under Rosetta, the machine really needs that extra 512 Mb. So 1.5 Gb unmatched trumps 1.0 Gb matched.

As above, a matched pair is a pair of memory modules that are identical in their speed and capacity (that part is easy) and also in their "composition". This is the internal organization of the rows and columns of the memory chips on the module, and the Serial Presence Detect settings. Unfortunately, Apple does not publish the exact specifications on how the RAM must match. Theoretically, RAM from different companies could match, but there is no way to tell in advance.

So, the only 100% way to get a matched pair is to buy 2 of the identical modules at the same time. Buying one later of the same brand and model may match, but may not, because manufacturers change their products' builds all the time - even a "name" brand like Kingston or Crucial is no guarantee that two modules purchased at separate times will make a matched pair.

We can guarantee a matched pair only as long as we have RAM from that same batch in stock, which may be a few weeks. After that, the chance of matching is still very, very good, but cannot be guaranteed 100%. That chance diminishes over time, until after a year or two, it becomes a toss-up that any module will match.
