With the announcement of Quark Xpress 6.0 shipping on the week of June 16 - 20 2003, there are some questions

Our best information at this time is that we will be able to supply new Quark Xpress 6.0 licenses at $1,399. We are taking pre-orders now, our Canadian wholesalers should be in a position to deliver stock to us late summer.

Compatibility

Quark Xpress 6.0 is Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar" compatible only. It will not run on OS 9. Please contact us for information on upgrading your machine to OS X.

Upgrades

Information on upgrading by telephone: The customer service representatives who will handle your order are not native English-speakers, so allow a half-hour or so of time, and be prepared to double- and triple- check the spelling of serial numbers, addresses, province names, etc.

Currently they are offering a pre-order discount of $25 on the 4 - 6 upgrade, making it US$274, and I got an extra $10 for calling in non-peak times - although when that is is not defined - but only after I complained about having to use UPS.

The default courier is UPS, and the product ships from Cheyenne Wyoming. If you don't like UPS's expensive customs clearing charges, you can request another courier if you have your account number ready to give them, I recommend DHL for small shipments from the US. Quark cannot handle USPS Parcel Post because Quark needs an account number to bill against. The shipping and handling fee is $30, you can also expect to pay taxes and brokerage to UPS when the package arrives.

When I started the phone call, the upgrades were "shipping next week", when I had paid for it, this changed to "shipping in two weeks".

Taxes: Quark charges a tax on the order, but the service representatives cannot explain what tax under which jurisdiction is being charged. One representative said it was Indian state tax, one said US Value-Added tax and one said it was GDL tax, none of which make any sense. They promised to email the tax calculations to me. You can't order your upgrade without paying the taxes, whatever they are, so be prepared for a loss or a protracted fight for a refund if the taxes turn out to be not legitimate for your order.

Update August 8 2003
Received a notice that the Quark 6 upgrade had finally shipped August 7 - that's a long 2 weeks since June 13 when the order was entered. Still no word from Quark with the breakdown of that mystery tax. Personally I think they were prepared to tell me anything to get me off the phone. We'll see when the product makes it here.

Upgrade arrived, consists of a CD and an invoice. The tax charged turns out to be Canadian GST, and a registration number is supplied. CAN$42.00 shipping and handling seems pretty excessive for something that could be sent airmail for $4.00, and would have arrived as quickly.

Installation requires both the new serial number and the old 4.x serial number, or a valid installation of the 4.x version on the hard drive. The validation code is supplied as a single 48 digit long string, but the onscreen entry in the installer is 8, 6 digit long boxes. Tedious. Attempting to register the product brings repeated "Connection failure" messages trying to reach registration.quark.com
